What Is a Bolster Pillow?

A bolster pillow is one of those cylindrical pillows that you will see on the end of a couch or on a bed along with other pillows. They were once used mostly for decorative purposed, but are now also used as comfortable and supportive neck pillows. As with other types of pillows, these ones are available with different types of covers and fillings, depending upon how they will be used.

The decorative bolster pillow for a couch or bed typically have some type of cotton cover and a synthetic filling such as foam or polyester. Pillow covers and inserts cab be purchased separately or as an all-in-one pillow. Having a removable cover is more convenient for cleaning the pillow and usually will extend the life of the pillow. If the cover or insert needs replacing, you can just replace one of them. If you are a sewer, you could also make your own bolster pillow covers to easily change the look.

Bolster pillows are very popular with kids of all ages. Some of these pillows have nylon covers and are stuffed with micro beads for maximum comfort. Kids love these pillows because they look good and are also very comfortable to lie on. You can now find similar neck pillows being made for adults with either micro beads or memory foam for great neck support. Down stuffed bolster pillows are also available. If you think you may be allergic to feather pillows, stick with the type that are filled with synthetic materials.

Bolster pillows filled with moisture resistant polyester can also be used with outdoor furniture. These pillows have been popular for hammock lovers for a while, but are now made for outdoor chairs and other furniture as well. The modern day bolster pillow has a myriad of uses both inside and outside of the home.
