Beginning Runner’s Guide – Sports Doctors

Unless your primary-care physician is a runner (and many doctors do run for their health), he or she may not be the best person to treat your injuries. Seek instead a doctor who specializes in sports injuries.

PODIATRISTS: Podiatrists specialize in the treatment of foot injuries, those occurring below the ankles. But even if your injury is in the upper or lower leg, a podiatrist may be able to provide treatment. This is because most running injuries begin in the foot. When the foot strikes the ground, the impact is often felt in the knee or the hip. Sometimes a minor adjustment in your running shoes (such as an insert) can prevent future injuries. If you have biomechanical imbalances that cause a faulty footstrike, you may need to obtain orthotics to place permanently in your shoes. Orthotics are expensive, however, and you should consider them only as a last resort.

ORTHOPEDISTS: Also known as, orthopods, or orthopedic surgeons. Orthopedists cure problems of the skeletal system, which includes the muscles and ligaments. Their practice covers the entire body, including the foot. Some orthopedists resist attempts by podiatrists to treat injuries above the ankle, and vice versa. Many orthopedists specialize in certain areas of the body, such as the knee.

OTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONALS: Physical therapists usually are qualified to treat (if not diagnose) sports injuries. Many high schools and colleges have trainers connected with teams. Some runners go to chiropractors for care. Massage therapists can help in your recovery.

When seeking a sports doctor, look first for one who is both familiar with running injuries and used to treating runners. As in any profession, some doctors (regardless of specialty) are better than others. Talk to other runners for recommendations on which doctor to select. If not happy with the treatment you receive from the first doctor, seek a second opinion. It may take time before you find a sports doctor capable of working with you.
